Camp Lejeune Water Contamination
Between August 1953 and December 1987, the drinking water at Camp Lejeune, a U.S. Marine Corps base in Jacksonville, North Carolina, was contaminated with toxic chemicals that can cause numerous serious health issues and cancers, as well as severe birth complications, miscarriages, and even death.
The Senate recently passed The Camp Lejeune Justice Act as part of a larger bill to protect military service members, veterans, and their families. Under this Act, those exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune during the affected decades may be entitled to compensation from the U.S. Government.
What Caused the Water Contamination at Camp Lejeune?
In the early 1980s, two water-supply systems on the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina were found to be contaminated with potentially cancer-causing chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and industrial solvents. These chemicals include:
- Benzene
- Perchloroethylene (PCE)
- Trichloroethylene (TCE)
- Vinyl chloride (VC)
Benzene, TCE and VC are all classified as carcinogenic, meaning they are cancer-causing, while PCE is likely to be carcinogenic. Exposure to any of these chemicals can cause an array of additional health effects.
From August 1953 to December 1987, it is estimated nearly 1 million civilian workers, military service members, and their families were potentially exposed to these toxic chemicals.

Camp Lejeune Justice Act
In June 2022, the U.S. government passed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, part of the Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act. This Act focuses on addressing issues that affect veterans and their family members who were exposed to toxic materials during their time in service.
Because of this new law, those who were exposed can now seek compensation. Anyone who lived or worked on the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base for at least 30 days between August 1,1953 and December 31,1987 may be eligible to file a lawsuit. Eligible participants can include:
- Civilian workers
- Veterans
- Family members
