Florida has several asbestos sites all across the coast, especially in the southern region. A large percentage of these sites were power plants, chemical plants, and military bases. Asbestos use was very common before it was regulated in the 1970’s due to known health risks. Workers at these sites (listed below) are at greater risk of developing mesothelioma and lung cancer. Unfortunately, many of the families of workers also have an increased risk of developing cancer because of the asbestos fibers that were carried home on the body and clothing of those workers.
Before the known health risks, asbestos was used as a heat retardant for many major industrial companies. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for example was known to have used asbestos for fireproofing purposes and in several of their space shuttles. Any asbestos containing materials used in construction of these space shuttles have potentially harmed the health of workers across the NASA base.
