What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma, sometimes referred to as meso or mesothelioma cancer, is a rare form of cancer that attacks the smooth lining of the chest, lungs, heart and abdomen. The layer of tissue surrounding these organs is made up of mesothelial cells, which is where mesothelioma gets its name. The single cause of this devastating disease is exposure to asbestos.

Unfortunately, there are very few treatment options, and most people diagnosed with mesothelioma do not survive. In fact, mesothelioma kills more than 2,500 Americans every year.

And while asbestos use has greatly declined in recent decades, this kind of cancer can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years after asbestos exposure to appear, meaning thousands of people are still diagnosed with mesothelioma every year.

What is Asbestos Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in the United States, with about 200,000 people diagnosed every year. Smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer, but asbestos exposure can also cause the disease, even among smokers.

If you’re a current or former smoker, and you were also exposed to asbestos, it’s 15 to 50 times more likely you’ll contract lung cancer. If you were a smoker exposed to asbestos, and then diagnosed with lung cancer, there could be complexities to the cause of your illness.

Asbestos Lawsuits

The SWMW Law team has vast knowledge of asbestos-containing products, and has focused its practice on honing our process and legal arguments to get the best results for our clients. Many of our clients are diagnosed with mesothelioma or lung cancer, and have no idea when or where they were exposed. We can help answer those questions and hold the liable party responsible.

As early as the 1930s, manufacturers and other corporations knew the risks of asbestos and did nothing to stop exposure. We can investigate the cause of your mesothelioma or lung cancer and to determine if an asbestos manufacturer is liable and should be held accountable. It’s our mission to hold these companies responsible for putting profits over people.

While there’s no cure for mesothelioma, researchers have made significant progress in understanding this particularly devastating form of cancer, developing new treatment options and alternative therapies to help patients suffering from the disease.

If you or a family member has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, or you have lost a loved one to the disease, you may be able to sue the companies responsible. We will strive to make sure you receive the compensation you deserve — for medical bills and your pain and suffering.
