Asbestos Exposure in North Carolina

A large industrial power plant with three tall smokestacks emitting thick white smoke against a clear blue sky. The facility consists of multiple beige and gray buildings with various structures and equipment. In the foreground, there is a grassy area.

North Carolina has a number of asbestos risks due to its military bases, industrial worksites, and several vermiculite plants. Veterans who were based at Fort Bragg, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejuene, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base may have been at risk due to high levels of asbestos in the facilities.

Power plant workers in North Carolina may also have a high risk of exposure. Asbestos was often found in the insulation materials used to wrap electrical conduits, and was in the plaster, drywall, and the cement used to construct the power plant buildings.

Asbestos exposure in North Carolina, as in many other states, has historically been linked to industrial activities, construction, and certain consumer products. While the use of asbestos has significantly declined due to regulations, exposure can still occur, particularly in older buildings and industries where asbestos was commonly used. Here are the most common causes of asbestos exposure in North Carolina:

Industrial Jobsites: North Carolina has a strong industrial history, and asbestos was widely used in various industries, including manufacturing, power plants, and textile mills. Workers in these environments were often exposed to asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), which were used for insulation, fireproofing, and equipment protection.

  • Power PlantsPower plants like those in Charlotte and Wilmington often contained asbestos in insulation materials used to protect machinery and pipes from high temperatures. Workers who maintained or repaired these systems were at risk of asbestos exposure.
  • Textile Mills: North Carolina’s prominent textile industry historically used asbestos in the production of fire-resistant fabrics. Workers in mills that handled raw asbestos fibers were especially vulnerable to inhalation of airborne asbestos particles.

Shipyards: The state’s coastal regions, including Wilmington, were home to shipyards where asbestos was used extensively in shipbuilding. The material was applied to pipes, boilers, and engine rooms as insulation to prevent fire. Shipyard workers who installed, repaired, or removed asbestos-containing materials faced high risks of exposure.

Construction and Renovation: Asbestos was widely used in building materials, such as insulation, drywall, floor tiles, and roofing, before its dangers were widely known. In North Carolina, many homes, schools, and commercial buildings constructed before the 1980s contain ACMs. Workers involved in renovation, demolition, or repair of these older structures may inadvertently disturb asbestos, releasing fibers into the air.

  • Roofing and Siding: Asbestos was a popular choice for roofing and siding materials because of its durability and fire resistance. Contractors or homeowners working on these older structures could be exposed during repairs or demolition.
  • Pipes and Boilers: Older buildings often have asbestos insulation on pipes and boilers. Plumbers and HVAC workers may face exposure if they work on or replace these systems without proper safety measures.

Automotive Industry: Asbestos was commonly used in the automotive industry, particularly in brake pads, clutches, and gaskets. Mechanics in the state could be exposed when working on older vehicles that still contain asbestos components. Brake and clutch repairs are particularly dangerous as the asbestos fibers can become airborne during sanding or replacement processes.

Military Bases: North Carolina is home to several military bases, such as Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg, where asbestos was commonly used in barracks, vehicle repair shops, and other facilities. Veterans and active-duty personnel who worked in these environments may have been exposed to asbestos through insulation, vehicle parts, or building materials.

Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA): In addition to industrial sources, there are areas in the state where asbestos occurs naturally in the soil. For example, certain regions in the western part of the state, particularly in the Appalachian Mountains, have natural asbestos deposits. Activities such as construction, mining, or landscaping in these areas can disturb asbestos fibers and lead to exposure.

You do not have to file your claim in the state in which you live.

It’s far more important to contact an attorney with a strong history of experience specifically in asbestos cases, than it is to select one who happens to be in your area of North Carolina. The most successful attorneys in your area may have never handled an asbestos case.
