California Mesothelioma & Asbestos Lawyers Asbestos Exposure in California

California ranks number one in mesothelioma and lung cancer deaths in the United States due to exposure in many workplaces and different types of industries. Power plants, production facilities and military bases along the coast have greatly affected people and employees.

Naval bases, such as Hunters Point near San Francisco, used asbestos materials for shipbuilding and repairs. This puts veterans who worked at these sites (see list below) at greater risk of developing mesothelioma and lung cancer.

Unfortunately, many of the families of workers at these sites also have an increased risk of developing cancer because of the asbestos fibers that were carried home on the body and clothing of those workers.

Statistics for Mesothelioma Cases in California

To this date, more than 4,700 mesothelioma and asbestos-related deaths and thousands of lung cancer diagnoses have been reported from California. That number ranks the state of California 1st in the United States for deaths caused by mesothelioma.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that primarily affects the lining of the lungs (pleura), although it can also occur in the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum), heart (pericardium), or testicles (tunica vaginalis). It is most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos, a group of naturally occurring minerals used in various industries for their fire-resistant and insulating properties.

Some of the types of mesothelioma include:

Pleural Mesothelioma: This type affects the lining of the lungs, leading to symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and persistent cough. It is the most common form of mesothelioma and is primarily caused by inhaling asbestos fibers.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma: This form occurs in the lining of the abdomen, causing abdominal pain, swelling, and digestive issues. It results from ingesting asbestos fibers, which can settle in the abdominal cavity.

Pericardial Mesothelioma: This rare type affects the lining of the heart, leading to symptoms like chest pain and irregular heartbeat. It is caused by asbestos fibers lodging in the pericardium.

Testicular Mesothelioma: This extremely rare form develops in the lining of the testicles, presenting with swelling or lumps. Its exact cause is less understood, but it is linked to asbestos exposure.

The following are common causes of mesothelioma:

Asbestos Exposure: The primary cause of mesothelioma is inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers. These fibers can become lodged in the mesothelium (the lining of the organs), causing inflammation and genetic changes that lead to cancer over time.

Occupational Exposure: People working in construction, shipbuilding, manufacturing, and other industries where asbestos was used are at higher risk.

Secondary Exposure:Family members of workers exposed to asbestos can also be at risk due to fibers brought home on clothing.
