Asbestos Exposure in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania ranks 3rd in the nation for mesothelioma deaths.

While mesothelioma is rare, it has occurred in residents and workers of Pennsylvania because of a specific and dangerous form of asbestos.

Asbestos & mesothelioma mine

Pennsylvania has four asbestos mines located in the southeastern region. The precise type of the asbestos found in these mines is amphibole. One subtype of amphibole asbestos, crocidolite, is considered to be the most dangerous type of asbestos because of the fibers’ tendency to remain in the lungs for longer periods of time. This creates the opportunity for mesothelioma cancer.

A number of major shipyardsconstruction sites, and pipefitting manufacturers are industries that have jobsites with known asbestos exposure.

Statistics for Mesothelioma Cases in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania ranks 3rd in the US for asbestos-related deaths. There have been 2,949 deaths from mesothelioma and asbestos lung cancer between 1999 – 2013.

What Is a Latency Period?

The latency period refers to the time interval between the initial exposure to a harmful substance, such as asbestos, and the manifestation of related diseases, such as mesothelioma or asbestos-related lung cancer. This period is particularly long for asbestos-related diseases, often spanning several decades.

In the context of mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer, the latency period can range from 20 to 50 years, or even longer in some cases. This prolonged latency period is due to the following factors:

Asbestos Fiber Inhalation and Deposition: When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can become lodged in the tissues of the lungs and other organs. Over time, these fibers cause irritation, inflammation, and cellular damage.

Cellular Changes and Cancer Development: The persistent presence of asbestos fibers can lead to genetic mutations and other cellular changes that eventually result in the development of cancer. This process occurs slowly and progressively over many years.

Disease Progression: Both mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer develop slowly. Initially, the damage may not cause noticeable symptoms, and it takes years for the disease to progress to a point where it can be detected and diagnosed.

The lengthy latency period of asbestos-related diseases can pose significant challenges for diagnosis and treatment. Individuals exposed to asbestos may not realize the health implications until many years later, making it essential to maintain awareness of their exposure history and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
