Asbestos Exposure in Delaware

There are several sites across Delaware in which asbestos use was common. Delaware is home to DuPont Chemical, which has been acknowledged to be among the worst corporate pollutants in the world, putting thousands of workers at risk for mesothelioma and lung cancer due to asbestos in their plant.
Chemical plants across the state used asbestos in factory boiler rooms, workspaces and production lines before it was finally regulated in the 1970’s due to known health risks. Workers at these sites (listed below) are at greater risk of developing mesothelioma and lung cancer. Unfortunately, many of the families of workers at the sites listed below also have an increased risk of developing cancer because of the asbestos fibers that were carried home on the body and clothing of those workers.
How Asbestos Exposure Becomes Mesothelioma
Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a rare and aggressive cancer that primarily affects the lining of the lungs (pleura) but can also occur in the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum), heart (pericardium), or testicles (tunica vaginalis). Here’s how asbestos exposure leads to mesothelioma:

Inhalation of Asbestos Fibers: Asbestos fibers are tiny particles that can become airborne when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed. When inhaled, these fibers can lodge in the lining of the lungs or other tissues. The body cannot easily expel them, leading to long-term health risks.

Chronic Irritation and Inflammation: Once asbestos fibers are lodged in the body, they cause chronic irritation and inflammation. The immune system tries to remove the fibers, but this often leads to ongoing cellular damage. Over time, this damage can cause genetic mutations and scarring, increasing the risk of cancer.

Development of Mesothelioma: The genetic mutations caused by asbestos exposure can lead to uncontrolled cell growth and the formation of tumors. In pleural mesothelioma, these tumors develop in the lining of the lungs, causing symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath. As the cancer progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to treat.

Latency Period: Mesothelioma has a long latency period, often taking 20 to 50 years after asbestos exposure for symptoms to appear. This delayed onset makes early diagnosis challenging, as symptoms are often nonspecific and resemble other conditions. By the time it is diagnosed, the disease is usually in an advanced stage.

Risk Factors: The risk of developing mesothelioma increases with the amount and duration of asbestos exposure, particularly in industries like construction and shipbuilding. Even secondary exposure, such as asbestos fibers brought home on clothing, can pose significant risks.
