Asbestos Exposure in Florida

Florida has several asbestos sites all across the coast, especially in the southern region. A large percentage of these sites were power plants, chemical plants, and military bases.

Asbestos use was very common before it was regulated in the 1970’s due to known health risks. Workers at these sites (listed below) are at greater risk of developing mesothelioma and lung cancer. Unfortunately, many of the families of workers also have an increased risk of developing cancer because of the asbestos fibers that were carried home on the body and clothing of those workers.

Before the known health risks, asbestos was used as a heat retardant for many major industrial companies. NASA, for example, was known to have used asbestos for fireproofing purposes and in several of their space shuttles. Any asbestos containing materials used in construction of these space shuttles have potentially harmed the health of workers across the NASA base.

Statistics for Mesothelioma Cases in Florida

To this date, more than 2,400 mesothelioma and asbestos-related deaths and thousands of lung cancer diagnoses have been reported from Florida. That number ranks the state of Florida 2nd in the United States on deaths caused by mesothelioma.

Common Types of Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that primarily develops in the lining of certain organs, known as the mesothelium. This cancer is most often linked to asbestos exposure, a naturally occurring mineral once widely used in construction, insulation, and various industrial applications. When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they can become lodged in the mesothelium, causing inflammation and genetic damage over time, eventually leading to the development of mesothelioma.
Common types of mesothelioma include:
Asbestos exposure can lead to several serious health issues, often with symptoms that may not appear until many years after the exposure. Here are some common signs of asbestos exposure:

Pleural Mesothelioma: This type develops in the lining around the lungs (pleura) and is the most common form of mesothelioma, making up about 75% of cases. Symptoms typically include chest pain, difficulty breathing, and a persistent cough.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Occurring in the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum), this form accounts for 15-20% of mesothelioma cases. Patients may experience abdominal pain, swelling, and digestive issues.

Pericardial Mesothelioma: This rare form affects the lining around the heart (pericardium) and comprises about 1% of cases. Symptoms often include chest pain, heart palpitations, and shortness of breath..

Testicular Mesothelioma: The rarest type, affecting the lining around the testicles (tunica vaginalis), represents less than 1% of mesothelioma cases. It may cause testicular lumps, swelling, and discomfort.

Weight Loss: Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of serious health issues, including asbestos-related conditions.
