SWMW Law, one of the top plaintiffs law firms in the country focused on representing victims of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases, is proud to announce Partner Mike Brockland has been elected president of the board of directors for The St. Louis Black Rep Theater.

“Supporting the arts is essential to a vibrant community, and The Black Rep stands as a powerful example of how the arts can educate, inspire, and unite,” Mike said. “For nearly five decades, its commitment to telling stories that reflect the richness of the Black American experience is unmatched – not only through its powerful productions, but also through its deep investment in education and community. From in-school performances and youth summer camps to fellowship programs that introduce students to the many dimensions of theater, The Black Rep is building the next generation of storytellers and creators. I am humbled to be a part of this legacy and excited to help further its mission of empowerment, opportunity, and artistic excellence.”

Founded by Ron Himes in 1976, The Black Rep aims to provide platforms for theater, dance, and other creative expressions from the Black perspective that heighten the social and cultural awareness of its audiences. Its vision is to provide a more equitable distribution of opportunities and resources for Black professionals and students in the theater; improve representation onstage and backstage in the theater industry; and foster a community culture of support and mentorship for those who will follow.

A longtime supporter of The Black Rep, Brockland has served as a board member for the past 8 years, most recently serving as the board’s secretary. He also served as a member of the theater’s governance committee.

Brockland joined SWMW Law in 2017, focusing his practice on helping individuals and families affected by mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. He has been selected as a Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyer since 2001. He also received the distinction of being selected as an “Up Coming Lawyer” by Missouri Lawyers Media in 2010 and was the recipient of the National Order of the Scribes Award for Excellence in Legal Writing in 2008. Prior to attending law school, he taught high school English in Kansas City, Missouri.

Outside of his work with The Black Rep, Brockland has also been involved with the Lafayette Square Neighborhood Association and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis’s Lawyers for City Neighborhoods.
