SWMW Law is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Jacob Benshoff, a law intern with the firm since 2024 and a current 3L at Saint Louis University School of Law (SLU Law). Last weekend, Jacob and his team from SLU Law won first place in the prestigious Missouri Attorney General’s Cup Trial Competition, a premier trial advocacy event that brings together some of the strongest law students in the state.
The victory marks an important milestone not just in Jacob’s legal journey, but also in the tradition of excellence upheld by SLU Law’s trial advocacy program.
A Prestigious Competition Among Missouri’s Top Law Schools
The Missouri Attorney General’s Cup Trial Competition is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous and respected law school trial competitions in the region. Each year, teams from Missouri’s four major law schools – SLU Law, University of Missouri – Columbia School of Law, University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law, and Washington University School of Law – compete in a full-scale mock trial designed to mirror a real courtroom experience.
Over multiple rounds, student competitors deliver opening statements, conduct direct and cross examinations of volunteer witnesses, and present closing arguments before a panel made up of a presiding judge and two scoring judges. All judges are practicing Missouri attorneys or sitting members of the judiciary, offering students a true-to-life test of their advocacy skills.
The competition is known not only for its high standards but for the invaluable feedback, professional exposure, and courtroom preparation it provides. Winning it is a distinction that reflects both exceptional talent and exceptional work ethic.
“Jacob’s work ethic and professionalism have been evident since he first joined us, and his success in this competition is a testament to his talent,” said Member Steve Wohlford. “This is one of the most prestigious competitions for law students, and Jacob proved he belongs at the top. We’re proud of Jacob and his accomplishments and look forward to several more years of working with him to advocate for our clients.”
Jacob joined SWMW Law as an intern in 2024 and quickly became known for his professionalism, reliability, and passion for serving clients and communities affected by catastrophic injuries and illnesses. His talent continues to shine both inside and outside of the classroom.
A Leader Inside and Outside the Courtroom
Jacob’s commitment to his legal studies is matched only by his commitment to service. He is a regular volunteer at firm-sponsored community events, where he has assisted families battling cancer, helped prepare meals for those experiencing food insecurity, and supported other local outreach efforts.
In July 2025, Jacob was recognized as the firm’s Employee of the Month, a reflection of both his outstanding work ethic and his willingness to go above and beyond to help others.
Before beginning his legal studies, Jacob attended University of Missouri – Columbia, earning degrees in Political Science and Sociology. He is on track to earn his Juris Doctor from SLU Law in 2026.
A Bright Future Ahead
Jacob’s success at the Missouri Attorney General’s Cup Trial Competition underscores his bright potential as a future trial attorney. His dedication to justice, service, and advocacy reflects the values SWMW Law strives to uphold each day.
We are honored to have Jacob on our team and look forward to supporting him as he continues his legal education and advances in his career.
