Industries With the Most Asbestos Trust Funds
Asbestos was used in virtually every major industry, but certain sectors had especially heavy use. If you worked in any of the following, there is a strong likelihood that products from one or more of the companies above were present at your workplace.
Construction and Building Products. Armstrong, USG, National Gypsum, Celotex, Flintkote, and Congoleum made asbestos flooring, drywall, joint compound, ceiling tiles, and roofing. Construction workers, drywall installers, roofers, and demolition crews were routinely exposed.
Insulation Manufacturing. Johns-Manville, Owens Corning, Pittsburgh Corning, W.R. Grace, and Eagle-Picher produced insulation used in homes, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and ships. Insulators, pipefitters, and boilermakers were among the most heavily exposed.
Power Generation and Industrial Equipment. Babcock & Wilcox, Combustion Engineering, and ABB Lummus Global made boilers, turbines, and equipment containing asbestos insulation and gaskets. Power plant workers, maintenance crews, and industrial mechanics worked around these for decades.
Automotive. Federal-Mogul, Raytech (Raybestos-Manhattan), General Motors (Motors Liquidation), and Maremont produced asbestos brake pads, clutch facings, and gaskets. Auto mechanics and assembly line workers were regularly exposed to the dust from these parts.
Shipbuilding and Marine. Many trust companies supplied asbestos products used extensively in naval and commercial shipbuilding, including insulation, gaskets, valves, and fireproofing. Navy veterans and shipyard workers have some of the highest rates of mesothelioma diagnoses.
Refractories and Steel. NARCO, Plibrico, Christy Refractories, APG, Quigley, and J.T. Thorpe produced heat-resistant materials used in steel mills, foundries, and other high-temperature settings. Steelworkers, furnace operators, and refractory bricklayers faced significant exposure.
